Immediately the limbs of Aeneas became undone by numbness; he utters a cry of pain and he stretches his palms to the heavens (prays), and cries out with a loud voice: "Oh thrice and four times blessed, to who's luck it happened to be to die on the shores of the Trojan fatherland, beneath the high walls of Troy. O Diomedes, strongest of the Greek people! I was not able to be killed by your hand, where savage Hector died by the weapon of Achilles, where the huge Sarpedon fell, where Simois, having seized and rolled so many shields and helmets of men under the waves and brave bodies.

As he was shouting such things the howling squall from the north struck the sail and lifted it to the stars. the oars shattered, then the ship turned and gave its side to the wave, then a sheer mountain of water followed in a mass. Some sailors hang on the top of the wave, others the wave, splitting open shows the earth between the waves. The stormy sea raged with sand, the north wind hurls three ships into the Rocks (the rocks the Italians call the Altars, which are in the middle of the waves, a frightful reef on the surface of the sea), the east win pushed three ships frm the deep sea into the shallows and shoals - pitiful to behold - Eurus has been injured by thrashing these ships, encircled them with a rampart of sand. One ship which was carrying Lycians and faithful Orontes, before the eyes of himself, a huge wave struck the stern, he is knocked forward off the ship, having been spun around in the head: The wave, driving the ship around spins it around three times in the same place, being swallowed in the sea. Swimmers appear scattered here and there in the vast whirlpool, the arms of men and planks and Trojan treasure appear in the waves. THe storm overpowered the ship of Ilioneus, and the ship of brave Achates, and one which carried Abas, ibe by which aged Aletes was carried; all the ships recieve unfriendly sea water by means of broken seams of the hulls and they split open at the seams.
